SPEAK YOUR TRUTH, YOUTH
A CELEBRATION OF POETRY
Other winners were:
-
2nd Place: Iris Gilsdorf, Grant High School
-
3rd Place: Michael Esperanza, Ockley Green Middle School
As poetry can be a catalyst for change and can help adults understand youths' perspectives better, I Am MORE invited Black youth poets and artists from around the state of Oregon to contribute a poem for the 2021 Black History Month. There is no particular theme, as we wanted to hear what is authentically on the minds of youth.
Two of our poets - Laila Vickers, age 15, and Belise Nishimwe, age 18 - were featured in the annual All Hands Raised event Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021. Its mission is to champion racial equity in the educational system and mobilize our community to advance sustainable systems change so students of color can achieve their full potential, from cradle to career.
